Don't sell our mining giants to China, or any other country!

So... plenty of foreign companies own parts of Australian companies, and there are plenty of foreign companies partly owned by Australians. Are you against partial ownership? If not, at what percentage do you draw the line?

It is quite clear that we cannot compete on cost with the Asian countries. Our comparative advantage will lie in becoming centre of excellence for research and development of products and services. Australia can also serve as an excellent test market for global companies for their products and services before they are launched in bigger markets. Our population is small but other characteristics such as purchasing power, population demographics and being early adopters of technology are similar to the bigger markets of Europe and USA.

I agree. We cannot compete with Chindia for any work that is labour-intensive, so we need to look at what we are good at that can be done with a small population (eg. science and research).
However, if we do not identify and focus on that goal, I fear that we will end up on the global scrapheap, doing whatever the other countries do not wish to do.
By focus, I mean build the infrastructure (education, equipment, etc) to enable us to become world providers and to maintain that status. Similar to how India have focussed on their computer industry.
Instead, we see our "best and brightest" going overseas due to a lack of funding and support.
Right now, we need visionary leaders in government, industry, academia and the community to work together on this. A good time for a summit, methinks.
