Hi everyone - and thanks for visiting.

I started www.australia2020.net after applying and failing to be invited to the Australian Government's Australia2020 Summit in Canberra - April 19th and 20th. I applied proposing to provide expertise in the "Productivity Agenda" topic group.

While I'm Australian (born and raised in Adelaide, SA), I actually live in the United States - Seattle, WA. I work in business development at Microsoft Corporation's headquarters and felt I could provide an interesting perspective on Australian innovation and technology from an expatriate point of view. In my job with Microsoft, I travel throughout the US, Europe and Asia developing business for the company, and work with all levels of businesses - major global corporations down to two person startups. I also work with a number of emerging enterprises in Australia.

While I am resident in the US, I do return to Australia 2-4 times per year, and was very interested in returning to Australia to participate in the Summit.

When the invitees were announced and I was not one of them, I decided to develop a site where all Australians - invitees to the Australia2020 Summit or not - could contribute ideas, discuss the topics at hand, and generally engage in debate.

Thanks for your interest, and I look forward to participating in the debate on this, our "Unofficial Australia2020 Forum".

Cheers, Dave.

Good work Dave. Its a shame that not everyone can be at the summit (I would've liked to have given my two cents worth as well :>) but at least we can have our say here :-)

Hey, thanks for joining up James - if you could have participated, which group would you have sought to join?

Cheers, Dave.

My interest lies in Science/Technology and Government - so I suppose those two categories :-)

Hello Dave & All,

Really appreciate that you have gone to the trouble of establishing this site. The Summit is a good idea but as usual its been hi-jacked by politicians and their concept of engagement and dialogue. Its very sad that in this day and age, Australians are still kept at a distance from those who deem themselves capable of 'running the country'.

I had thoughts of applying but dismissed them when the media informed me of the exclusivity of the selection panel. Where was the dustman, where was the shop keeper and the little old lady who lives down the street??? Why are the not included? A brilliant idea could come from anywhere. For all their brilliance, academic achievement and experience, Do we really have time to waste listening to the same minds who have perpetuated the problems in the first place?

Peace,
Jule

Actually, despite the fact that I was not selected - I still have considerable faith in the Summit. I disagree that the Summit has been "hi-jacked" by politicians - rather I think there is a healthy mix of experience, academia and industry.

Well, to be frank - how do you know those folks aren't there? Looking through the 1000 names, there were hundreds I didn't recognize, and plenty of those didn't have a "Dr." or "Prof." in front of them. I choose to believe that the selection panel did their best to come up with a spread of the population, even if there were more than a few celebrities or prominent people there who would otherwise have an opportunity for their thoughts to be known.

In fact, I support the decision to not bring on board the President of the AMA (as an example) - she has a national forum to push her agenda without need for this Summit. This Summit should be for those folks who don't have such a means to present their views.

What are your thoughts?

Cheers, Dave.

Hi everyone, I'm James (different person to the jamesm who posted earlier). I'm 16 and a year 10 student in Newcastle. While I don't know all that much, I am excited by the possibilities that this summit will bring. As a kid with an awful lot of years ahead of me, its always great to know that other people out there are thinking about the future of our great country as well.

Well done Dave. This site should provide a very useful addition to the summit and provide those of us not attending with a voice.

Hi David!

I am quite impressed with this site. However I am a bit concerned that it could become a distraction from the summit. Conspicuously absent is a link to the official site, which is particularly worrying when we only have until 5pm today to contribute a submission.

Also, this site would be far more effective if the delegates know about it. Do they? If not, please inform them!

Hi There I'm Jon

I was left out of the families & communities thingy.

Thanks for establishing this.

I was concerned about their representation model and the concept of "best and brightest"

What concerned me is that the feminists whinged and then the government responded.

If they were to use one of their own legislated models they would have used the discrimination act and included aborigines, disabled, the elderly, non english speaking backgrounds etc - and would have highlighted that representation.

The government have shown themselves totally driven by one group.

No mens groups are represented despite the dire straights men find themselves in.

It will be a talk fest.

If the government deliberately excludes certain groups - what does it say about the future?

I am not even sure they have the capability to understand the questions (god who framed those - with answers already prepared).

I am a malist or is it a masculinst? - trying to encourage males to assert themselves and contribute to the debate.

I think they should have held it online and in state and federal offices, council chambers etc all over the country.

Hi from gaz. I have no affiliations to declare, I'm just one of the unwashed masses.
At the moment, I'm on a bit of a sustainability kick, so my posts will probably show that bias.
I missed out on putting a submission to the 2020 Summit, due to some personal crises.
I hope that through this forum, I can still have a voice, and that one of the summiteers will read our comments and perhaps take some ideas to the summit.

The people r selected to attend the summit just because their brains can support great ideas about how to build a better Australia for all the Australians .

This summit calls for productive & creative ideas and valuable&Professional advice about building a better Australia .Ms Jule ,do u think it's capable for a the shop keeper or the little old lady who lives down the street to attend the summit and speak out their thoughts ?

It's true that a brillant idea can come from anywhere .But the problem is a brilliant idea doesn't equal to a effective idea or a productive one which can benefit the whole society .

This is a summit ,not a charitable dinner .So ,don't ask where is the shop keeper or the little poor lady .If u do care about them ,go to the street and treat a poor homeless lady a dinner ,which is better than speaking nonsense here .

peace ,

Yuan
